Bisque (often called "biscuit") also refers to pottery that has been fired but not yet glazed. The porous nature of bisque earthenware means that it readily absorbs water, while vitreous ware and bone china are almost non-porous even without glazing. The temperature of bisque firing is usually at least 1000°C, although higher temperatures are common. The firing of the ware that results in the bisque article causes permanent chemical and physical changes to occur. These result in a much harder and more resilient article which can still be porous, and this can ease the application of glazes. From Wikipedia under the

There is no lead in glazing that I am aware of at all. The only few unglazed tile are natural stones. Most all tile is glazed. For most uses this is what you ll want. Q. I'm planning how I would glaze a piece I have not made yet, simply, a round lid shape with walls. Example: I don't want to leave the rim (pointing down) unglazed - is there any way to go about firing this so that this edge can be glazed? Asked by Janelle W - Mon Jun 9 15:45:07 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Well, I'm not entirely sure of what you're asking, but it you just wax the very bottom of the edge, you can glaze the entire piece with a non runny glaze. Just as long as you leave that edge, the lip of the lid, the part that will be touching the kiln (preferably some stilts) than it should be fine. Make sure you know your glazes, though. If you're talking about glazing the rim of the lid, think of it this way: some part of the pot needs to not have glaze on it so that it can touch the kiln and not fuse to it.
